I am a wife, and mother who is all of 5 feet tall. I did not grow up hunting or around any type of firearms. In 2020 while watching what was going on around the country, I started to wonder what I would do if I were in some of those situations. This is when I started to realize I am my own first responder. I truly believe and hope I will never be in a situation that I will need to protect myself, but with that said there are no guarantees. My true thought is that I would rather be protected and never need to protect myself than to be in a situation where I cannot protect myself.
My husband is a retired Air Force Veteran, and you would think that I would have went to him first to learn how to protect myself. While I truly love my husband, and he is my protector, I wanted to learn myself. As women, we think differently and handle situations differently.
The very first time I ever held and fired a firearm was July 2020, a Ruger .22lr. That same day I did try a different caliber and was taken aback and thought there was no way I would ever shoot anything higher than a .22. I will be honest, I had to force myself to try different pistols. I will not say it was always easy and it was even a little scary. After a few weeks of going to the range I decided I should try a higher caliber. I will admit at first it was a bit nerve racking. Since then, I have overcome the fear and realized that as long you follow all of the safety rules, and respect the firearm you have in hand, it is not so bad.
Owning and shooting any type of firearm is a very serious responsibility. I have learned to respect each and every firearm I have shot. It is not the firearm that hurts people, it is people who either have bad intentions or, I believe in most cases, people who just have not had the proper training.
Equip Yourself Pistol Safety Training is here to offer help and confidence in teaching, not only the safety rules that MUST be followed, but to also help you move past any fears you may have shooting or owning your own firearms.
